Gua Sha is an ancient healing technique that produces similar effects to cupping. In Gua Sha – also known as kerokan or coining – a Chinese medicine practitioner uses a distinctive Gua Sha massage tool / spoon to scrap the patient’s skin. The “scraping” is meant to stimulate microcirculation in the soft tissue. Gua Sha is usually performed on the back, neck, arms, legs and buttocks (a gentler version is also used on the face).
